SO ALEX, WHY IS THIS YOUR SONG OF THE WEEK?
It’s been about four months since Jimmy Balito was last in the public eye. The last time we saw him, he was going hell for leather on a duet of 70s rockers Free’s ‘All Right Now’ with his coach on The Voice UK and friend of the blog Olly Murs. He finished second on the final that same night behind fellow Team Olly member Molly Hocking, but he’s not been resting on his laurels.
After squirrelling away in the studio, he now re-emerges with his debut single, and the result is surprisingly good. Not that we mean that in a back handed way, but traditionally the first single out from a contestant on a talent show is usually of the victory lap ‘this is my moment’ ballad variety.
Not so Sussex born Jimmy, for ‘Perfume’ is a self penned, understated but golden throwback to the mid 00s indie pop sound populated by The Feeling, The Hoosiers and The Kooks that kicks into high gear by the song’s end.
It reveals its charms more with every listen, and is refreshingly different enough to stand out on the radio. It’s early days yet, but on this basis, this single is a compelling suggestion that this could be the first of many hits yet for Jimmy.
