#SongoftheWeek: Dido – ‘Hurricanes’

  • ARTIST: Dido
  • SONG: Hurricanes

SO ALEX, WHY IS THIS YOUR SONG OF THE WEEK?

2013 was when we last heard from Dido, with her brilliant ‘Girl Who Got Away’ album, which, in a nod to the sample of ‘Thank You’ from Eminem on his ‘Stan’ that sprung her to the incredible sales and plaudits enjoyed by her first two albums, 1999’s ‘No Angel’ and 2003’s ‘Life For Rent’, saw collaborations with Kendrick Lamar amongst others.

Now with a new record deal with BMG (Kylie, Rick Astley and Gabrielle), she releases this first taste of her forthcoming fifth studio album. When we say it’s a return to the rawness of her early material, it’s a fair assessment. It has the same organic warmth of the production on the likes of ‘Here With Me’, and has a haunting vibe lyrically throughout, about feeling the presence of someone even when they’re not there. A back to basics sound then, but one that really works.

‘Hurricanes’ is available to stream and download now, and Dido’s new album ‘Still On My Mind’ is released on 8th March next year, both via BMG Records. Twitter: @DidoOfficial
