It’s midday on Thursday, and time to take another look back at the big UK chart hits from the turn of the millennium with The Story of Pop: 2000. This week: a US R&B diva makes her final UK top 10 entry with an absolute classic banger…
Before the spring of 2000, husky voiced US R&B/soul chanteuse Toni Braxton was perhaps best known for her string of weepy classics like her massive 90s smashes ‘Unbreak My Heart’ and ‘Breathe Again’.
But after a couple of years away, she was about to prove there was more to her than a totes emosh ballad, with the killer first single off her third studio album, ‘The Heat’.
Produced by a man we’ll be meeting a lot in the rest of this series – one Rodney ‘Darkchild’ Jerkins – ‘He Wasn’t Man Enough’ was her sassy riposte to the new girlfriend of a wrongdoing ex-husband. It was quite literally the 00s musical equivalent of the ‘Sipping the tea’ meme.
It gave Toni a stonking return to the charts upon release 20 years ago, peaking at #5 here and #2 over on the Billboard chart in the States. It sadly remains her final UK top 10 hit to date, but this week we remember what a banger ‘He Wasn’t Man Enough’ was. A fine way to bow out of a UK hit making career indeed.
