- ARTIST: Little Mix
- SONG: Break Up Song
SO ALEX, WHY IS THIS YOUR SONG OF THE WEEK?
We can only imagine what a fine line music stars must tread in these current times. And for Little Mix, we imagine that line is an even finer one for them to tread being at the poppiest end of it all, not wanting to seem superficial and carry on as if all is normal, but equally keeping their fans satiated. Particularly when, prior to lockdown, they were about to come firing out on all cylinders again.
However, even though much of their grand plans to return have either been pushed back or cancelled altogether (chiefly, a now postponed new BBC One talent show with them at the helm to find a fresh new pop band to support them on their now cancelled summer tour), some have happily remained.
And their new single ‘Break Up Song’, the first off their forthcoming sixth album, is one part of their return that has carried on. And boy are we glad it has. Opting along the same retro electro lines that Dua Lipa has ploughed a successful furrow in of late, this is unquestionably their catchiest banger of a single since ‘Shout Out To My Ex’.
One thing they’ve also managed to deliver is a killer video for the single, a mixture of cutaway shots and craft paper finery that doesn’t suggest once that it’s been made with them all being apart at the present moment. Queens of ingenuity. Whenever their grand plans for further chart domination do resume properly, it will be major for sure with songs as good as this.
