SO ALEX, WHY IS THIS YOUR SONG OF THE WEEK?

Lawson are – to use the Smash Hits term – BACK! BACK! BACK! Admittedly not in the time they thought they’d be returning in when they were mapping this all out a month or so ago but hey, it’s a return all the same.

And what a mighty one it is too. For ‘Lovers’, their first single in four years, is a slowly building but inescapably brilliant beast of a pop belter that they’ve always done so well.

In fact, this foray into a slightly more electronic field – calling to mind the recent venturings of OneRepublic – actually suits them down to the ground.

You’re reminded instantly on hearing this of what a good ear for melody and hooks they continue to have, which suggests that – whenever it does appear – their third album will be worth the wait.
