#SongoftheWeek: SZA & Justin Timberlake – ‘The Other Side’

  • ARTIST: SZA & Justin Timberlake
  • SONG: The Other Side

SO ALEX, WHY IS THIS YOUR SONG OF THE WEEK?

Four years ago in 2016 was when Justin Timberlake last had a hit of considerable magnitude. That was with the unstoppable floorfiller that was ‘Can’t Stop The Feeling’, lifted from the soundtrack of the animated film Trolls, on which he also provided the voice of the character Branch.

Zipping forward to 2020, the sequel to that film – Trolls: World Tour – is awaiting release, and Justin’s back on voice acting and soundtrack providing duties – this time with a special guest, in the form of US songstress SZA.

The result is a track that’s just as much fun as its predecessor was – a funky, and very cool slice of R&B led pop, with a video that pays a suitable homage to 90s hip hop videos (think Missy Elliott, ‘Supa Dupa Fly’ era).

You suspect that this is going to be what returns him to his usual heights following the grave underperformance of his ‘Man of the Woods’ album in 2018. But when it’s a song as good as ‘The Other Side’, that can only be a good thing.

‘The Other Side’ is available to stream and download now via RCA / Sony Music, and ‘Trolls: World Tour’ is released in UK cinemas on 17th April. Twitter: @SZA / @jtimberlake
