SO ALEX, WHY IS THIS YOUR SONG OF THE WEEK?

How very annoying. We finish up writing a series of blogs about pop music from 1999, then a brand new pop act comes along named after that very fine year. Still, we’ll forgive Planet 1999 for their tardiness.

The French act’s new single ‘Party’ isn’t however, as it’s name would imply, a Max Martin type banger. Instead it’s the most gorgeous three minutes of sophistipop we’ve heard this side of their fellow countrymen Air and our own Saint Etienne.

All dreamy, swirly synths and whispered vocals, this is the sound of the party just as it’s entering after hours mode but before the morning breaks, and we for one absolutely love it.
