#SongoftheWeek: Rick Astley – ‘Every One of Us’

  • ARTIST: Rick Astley
  • SONG: Every One of Us

SO ALEX, WHY IS THIS YOUR SONG OF THE WEEK?

Even though some would argue the concept has been made redundant when a self built playlist of an artist’s back catalogue is available online in seconds, that hasn’t stopped many from still giving a greatest hits album a go.

Rick Astley is the latest to do so, his latest album bringing together tracks from his debut in 1987 that started it all with ‘Never Gonna Give You Up’ all the way through to his return with his chart topping ’50’ and ‘Beautiful Life’ albums in 2016 and 2018, plus some pianoforte reimaginings of his biggest hits.

But of course, no greatest hits is complete without a brand new song – and it just so happens to be a corker too. ‘Every One of Us’ is a rousing, folksy foot stomper with a dash of added soul, and a reminder of how his voice has matured and improved with time.

In fact, it packs a melodic charm that quite a few comparable current male vocalists severely lack, which is another huge tick in its favour, and a mark of how well he has transitioned as an artist and performer now in his third decade of doing so.

‘Every One of Us’ is available to stream and download now, and Rick’s new album ‘The Best of Me’ is also out now, both via BMG. Twitter: @RickAstley
