Having hit the charts in 1980 with “You’ll Always Find Me In The Kitchen At Parties”, Jona Lewie made an attempt for the festive top spot that year. With its suitably om-pom-pom Salvation Army brass band backing, ‘Stop The Cavalry’ is a song that is a Christmas classic through and through.
It’s also a song with a message, that focussed on those caught in combat and conflict during the festive season, as a soldier in ‘the nuclear fallout zone’ wistfully wishes he ‘could be dancing around / In the arms of the girl I love’. It’s little wonder then, that this has become something of a festive anthem for those who continue to serve the country in the army to this day.
