- ARTIST: TLC
- SONG: Sleigh Ride
Now here’s the thing. When it comes to Christmas songs, there’s non more joyous and life affirming for me as “Sleigh Ride”. It’s like the Morgan Freeman of festive numbers, and also perfect for a girl group to do (see The Ronettes’ recording for the Phil Spector Christmas album in the 60s). And for that reason, it’s also one that I believe is ripe for reinterpretation.
Which is precisely what the bestselling female R&B group of all time, TLC did when they covered the song for a Christmas album put together by their record label, LaFace, back in 1995. Their (sadly) late member, Lisa ‘Left Eye’ Lopes, contributes a rap to it which has to be heard to be believed, and also gives new meaning to the term ‘Ho ho ho’.
