- ARTIST: Rak-Su feat. Banx & Ranx
- SONG: Pyro Ting
SO ALEX, WHY IS THIS YOUR SONG OF THE WEEK?
Now, this is the confusing thing. According to a Tweet Ashley off of Rak-Su sent us on Wednesday evening, “Pyro Ting” isn’t technically the first single proper from the guys (who, incidentally, since we last had them as #SongoftheWeek back in February, have provided us with a lot of our recent traffic on this here blog. The Rak Pack are out in force as it very much were).
But here’s where we have to put our foot down a little. Because “Pyro Ting”, a collaboration with Banx & Ranx – who recently hit the top 10 with Ella Eyre on “Answerphone” – sounds like a pretty blinding single to launch your career with. It’s no half arsed Louisa Johnson or Matt Terry type shambles, put it that way.
On a sparse, minimal ragga toasting backing, what sounds like Ashley and Myles take it in turn to do some low mumbly rappy bits, mentioning Charizard and chilli sauce. Sonically, it sounds like Major Lazer and Diplo meets A.R Rahman, with this eerie sort of exotic horn riff punctuating it over the main hook line: “Step back, it’s a pyro ting / Warm your hands it’s a pyro ting”.
It all then drops out to an atmospheric second(!) chorus: “Feels like the hottest vibe (ay ay ay ay) / It’s about to blow your mind (ay ay ay ay) / Light up the streets tonight, fulfil the funk ‘n grind / Let’s set the place alight (ay ay ay ay)”. And then the Diplo Rahman ragga toasting resumes until the song’s end, two minutes and 51 seconds later.
One suspects this hasn’t been promoted as a first single in case it’s too “out there” for some people. Quite frankly, it is their loss, as with this release, Rak-Su have suddenly established themselves as British pop’s most exciting new prospect of the summer – and beyond.
“Pyro Ting” is available to stream and download now via SyCo/Sony Music. Rak-Su are supporting Little Mix on their Summer Hits Tour, starting next Friday, 6th July at Hove County Cricket Ground. Twitter: @RakSuMusic
