- ARTIST: Christine and the Queens
- SONG: Girlfriend
SO ALEX, WHY IS THIS YOUR SONG OF THE WEEK?
Héloïse Letissier, better known by her stage name of Christine and the Queens, is one of the few names – in fact, the only name – in French pop to breakout across Europe in the last few years. 2016 saw the UK breakthrough of her debut album ‘Chaleur Humaine’, and it’s brilliant single/unforgettable video ‘Tilted’.
Now it’s second album time for her, and happily, much of what made her such an appealing prospect the first time round appears to be carrying on into this first new release from her in over a year.
Featuring a guest rap from Dâm-Funk, “Girlfriend” is all minimalist, spacey electro Europop that’d put Robyn to shame, with an equally pleasant vibe that makes you think this is how Vanessa Paradis would sound if she was still making music today.
‘Bonne chance’ to Christine and the Queens with this new release we say. It’s about time there was more success for these kind of releases here in the UK music scene.
