- ARTIST: Albin Lee Meldau
- SONG: The Weight Is Gone
SO ALEX, WHY IS THIS YOUR SONG OF THE WEEK?
As it turns out, Sweden has had a hand in both our #ThrowbackTunesday selection and our brand new #SongoftheWeek this week. Who’d thunk it? And this week, it’s the debut from an artist who I believe we’re going to be hearing a lot more of this summer learned viewers.
27 year old Albin Lee Meldau hails from Gothenburg, Sweden, and is the son of a Swedish mum who is a jazz singer and a British dad who is a punk rocker. Both influences play out well on his first release, which BBC Radio 2 have already had as a Record of the Week.
Awash with 60s-spy-show reverb guitars, and a bluesy, gravelly voice making the most of an irresistible earworm of a chorus, ‘The Weight Is Gone’ is easily primed to become one of the summer’s first big radio hits.
Already the winner of an award at Sweden’s equivalent of the Grammys, and the Anchor Award in Germany, where he was chosen by a panel including David Bowie’s producer Tony Visconti, Albin looks set for big things with the release of his debut album in a fortnight’s time. Remember where you heard him first.
‘The Weight Is Gone’ is available to stream and download now, and Albin’s debut album ‘About You’ is released on 1st June, both via Astralwerks. Twitter: @albinleemeldau
