#SongoftheWeek: Nadine Coyle – ‘Girls on Fire’

  • ARTIST: Nadine Coyle
  • SONG: Girls on Fire

SO ALEX, WHY IS THIS YOUR SONG OF THE WEEK?

Next month will be five years since Girls Aloud – but let’s be honest, mainly Cheryl, Kimberley and Nicola – finished their 10th anniversary tour, and then promptly split up one of British pop’s greatest acts of a decade on a Twitlonger, a move that was essentially the pop equivalent of that episode of Sex and the City when Carrie’s then boyfriend breaks up with her on a post it note.

Where art thou, then, Nadine Coyle, their de facto lead singer, and owner of some of the finest pins and pipes in girl group history, who had nothing to do with said Twitlonger decision? Making pretty aces new solo material with Brian Higgins and his team at Xenomania, who gave GA their biggest hits, that’s what.

Last September’s ‘Go To Work‘ – her first solo release since her great but ill fated 2010 Tesco funded project ‘Insatiable‘ – started things off pleasantly enough, if leaning a little too much towards a typical Tropi-house bobbins route. But it’s her brand new single ‘Girls on Fire’ that really hits all the right notes.

In it, you hear shades of ‘Love Machine’, a bit of ‘No Good Advice’, mixed with the punchy sass of Katy Perry. Oh and a lung belting chorus along the lines of ‘This one’s for my girls who on fire / Cause ya know that ya got it, ya know that ya doin’ it weeeellll’. It quite simply has everything and the kitchen sink on it – in the best possible way. And if it’s any indication of what her forthcoming EP has to hold, then it’s safe to say Nadine is a girl very much allowed to maintain her past’s legacy to its fullest – and embark on a bright new future with it.

‘Girls on Fire’ is available to stream and download now via Virgin EMI. Nadine kicks off her first solo UK tour on 10th May in Glasgow at O2 ABC – tickets are on sale today. Twitter: @NadineCoyleNow
