- ARTIST: Kylie Minogue
- SONG: Dancing
SO ALEX, WHY IS THIS YOUR SONG OF THE WEEK?
We’ll not lie here. We love Kylie Minogue. Have done for a while. But her 2015 ‘Christmas’ album aside (a festive release, and thus immune from our usual critical approach, but a great album regardless), Kylie’s last decent normal studio album (for us, anyway) was ‘Aphrodite’ in 2010.
Her last studio album, 2014’s ‘Kiss Me Once’ felt very much like a parody of Kylie, and the style of song and music the public has known her for since that comeback with the gold hotpants and the ‘La la la’ almost two decades ago.
That is to say, songs on it like ‘Les Sex’ felt like a very tired old run through of what had come before (cf said song with say, the awful ‘Nu-Di-Ty’ on her 2007 comeback album ‘X’). Which of course, for an artist who has had collaborators as varied as Calvin Harris and Manic Street Preachers in the past, has never been the point of Ms Minogue.
Thank goodness, then, for ‘Dancing’, her first new single from her upcoming fourteenth studio album. With this single, Kylie has returned to the very DNA of what she is about: a great pop banger that is of the moment yet at once timeless.
Taking a hint of a new Nashville swing, with some cool beats to match, it’s lyrics and triumphant chorus is as deliciously defiant and sassy as ever: ‘When I go out, I wanna go out dancing … This is where I wanna be, with you, your arms wrapped around me / And fireworks reflecting in your eyes’.
She’s not neglected her feel good, dance floor led roots, but she has carefully found a way to make that work with a maturer sound for this new release. I suspect this’ll be the first of many on her new album that will make us want to go out dancing.
‘Dancing’ is available to stream and download now, and Kylie’s new album ‘Golden’ is released on 6th April, both via BMG/Liberator Music. Twitter: @kylieminogue
